What exactly is xeriscape?

Xeriscape (from the Greek "xeros" meaning dry) is a landscaping approach that minimizes water use through plant selection, soil improvement, efficient irrigation, and mulching. It doesn't mean a yard full of rocks and cacti — a well-designed xeriscape can be lush, colorful, and full of life.

In Bend's climate, xeriscape typically means replacing water-hungry turf with drought-tolerant native and adapted plants, decorative rock, drip irrigation, and thoughtful hardscape.

How much water does xeriscape actually save?

Most of our clients see outdoor water use drop by 50–70% after a xeriscape conversion. In dollar terms, that's typically $600–$1,500 per year in Bend, depending on your current irrigation usage.

The savings are highest in the first few years after installation, when traditional landscapes require the most supplemental irrigation. Once established (usually 2–3 years), xeriscape plants need minimal watering beyond natural rainfall.

Does Bend have a turf rebate program?

Yes. The City of Bend's water utility offers rebates for converting irrigated turf to water-wise landscaping. Rebate amounts vary by program year, but typically range from $0.50 to $1.00 per square foot of turf removed.
