XERISCAPE GUIDE · BEND, OREGON · 2024

How to Xeriscape in Bend, Oregon: A Step-by-Step Guide

Xeriscaping in Bend is one of the most rewarding landscape projects you can undertake. The process is straightforward, but the details matter — especially in Central Oregon's specific climate and soil conditions. Here's our step-by-step guide to a successful xeriscape in Bend.

Step 1: Assess Your Site and Set Goals

Start by walking your property and noting: sun exposure (full sun, part shade, full shade), existing plants you want to keep, drainage patterns, and areas of heaviest water use.

Set a realistic budget. A front yard xeriscape in Bend typically costs $8,000–$20,000 professionally installed. If you're doing some of the work yourself, you can reduce costs significantly.

Step 2: Design Your Xeriscape

A good xeriscape design groups plants by water needs (hydrozones), places the highest-water plants closest to the house, and uses hardscape and rock to reduce the total planted area.

We recommend working with a professional designer for the initial layout — especially for the irrigation design. A poorly designed drip system can waste as much water as a spray system.

Step 3: Remove Existing Turf

Turf removal is the most labor-intensive part of a xeriscape conversion. Options include: sod cutter rental ($150–$300/day), solarization (covering with black plastic for 6–8 weeks), or herbicide treatment followed by removal.

We handle turf removal as part of our xeriscape installation service. We use a sod cutter for clean removal and haul away all debris.

PRO TIP

If you're applying for the City of Bend's turf rebate, document the existing turf with photos and measurements before removal. The rebate application requires proof of the turf that was removed.

Step 4: Install Irrigation, Plants, and Rock

Install drip irrigation before planting. It's much easier to lay drip lines before plants are in the ground.

Plant in fall (August–September) or spring (May–June) for best establishment. Water new plants regularly for the first full growing season, even drought-tolerant ones.

Apply 3 inches of rock or mulch after planting. This is the most important step for weed suppression and moisture retention.
