LANDSCAPE GUIDE · BEND, OREGON · 2024
Mulch is one of the highest-value things you can do for your Bend landscape. It conserves moisture (critical in our dry climate), suppresses weeds, moderates soil temperature, and makes beds look clean and finished. Here's what mulch installation costs in Central Oregon.
| Service | Typical Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wood chip mulch (per yard) | $35–$55/yard installed | 1 yard covers ~100 sq ft at 3" |
| Bark mulch (per yard) | $45–$65/yard installed | Finer texture, longer lasting |
| Decorative rock (per ton) | $80–$150/ton installed | Permanent, no decomposition |
| Rubber mulch (per yard) | $60–$90/yard installed | Playground areas |
| Full bed refresh (typical home) | $400–$1,200 | Includes edging and cleanup |
In Bend's high desert climate, we recommend wood chip or bark mulch for planting beds. A 3-inch layer reduces evaporation by up to 70%, which is significant when you're paying for irrigation water.
Decorative rock (crushed basalt, river rock, decomposed granite) is excellent for xeriscape areas and paths. It doesn't decompose, doesn't blow away in Bend's wind, and looks natural in our volcanic landscape.
PRO TIP
Apply mulch in spring before the heat arrives to lock in soil moisture. Keep mulch 2–3 inches away from plant stems and tree trunks to prevent rot and pest issues.
To cover 100 square feet at 3 inches deep, you need approximately 1 cubic yard of mulch. Most residential properties need 3–8 yards for a full bed refresh.
