HARDSCAPE GUIDE · BEND, OREGON · 2024
One of the most common questions we get from Bend homeowners is: should I go with pavers or poured concrete for my patio? Both are good options, but they have very different characteristics — especially in Central Oregon's freeze-thaw climate. Here's an honest comparison from a company that installs both.
Poured concrete is generally less expensive upfront. Pavers cost more initially but offer long-term advantages.
| Factor | Concrete | Pavers |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost (per sq ft) | $8–$15 | $15–$30 |
| Typical 300 sq ft patio | $2,400–$4,500 | $4,500–$9,000 |
| Repair cost (crack) | $200–$800+ | $50–$200 (replace individual pavers) |
| Lifespan | 25–30 years | 30–50+ years |
| Resale value added | Moderate | High |
This is where pavers have a clear advantage in Central Oregon. Bend experiences 100+ freeze-thaw cycles per year. Poured concrete expands and contracts with temperature changes, and over time, this causes cracking — especially if the slab wasn't poured thick enough or the base wasn't properly prepared.
Pavers are designed to flex slightly with ground movement. Individual pavers can shift and be re-leveled without replacing the entire surface. In our experience, concrete patios in Bend typically show significant cracking within 10–15 years. Well-installed paver patios can last 30–50 years.
For most Bend homeowners, we recommend pavers. The higher upfront cost is offset by longer lifespan, easier repairs, and better performance in our freeze-thaw climate.
That said, concrete can be a good choice for budget-conscious projects or areas with less exposure to freeze-thaw cycles. We're happy to discuss both options during a free consultation.
PRO TIP
If you're planning to sell your home within 5–10 years, pavers typically add more to resale value than concrete. Buyers in Bend's market recognize the quality difference.
