Sod gives you an instant lawn — you can walk on it within 2–3 weeks of installation. This is a major advantage if you're preparing for an event, selling your home, or simply don't want to look at bare dirt all summer.
Seed takes 8–12 weeks to establish a usable lawn, and requires consistent watering and protection from foot traffic during germination. In Bend's dry summers, this means daily irrigation — which adds to the cost.
PRO TIP
In Bend's climate, the best time to seed is late August to mid-September, when temperatures moderate and fall rains begin. Spring seeding is possible but requires more irrigation. Avoid summer seeding entirely.
Both sod and seed can produce excellent lawns in Bend. Sod is more reliable because the grass is already established — it just needs to root into your soil. Seed requires perfect conditions during the critical germination period, which can be challenging in Bend's dry, variable climate.
For most residential projects, we recommend sod for its reliability and faster results. For large areas where cost is a primary concern, seed with a fall installation timeline can work well.
