Understanding Soil in Bend, Oregon

Bend's soil is unlike most other parts of Oregon. Our volcanic heritage has left us with rocky, sandy, alkaline soil that drains quickly and holds few nutrients. Understanding your soil is the foundation of a successful landscape in Central Oregon.

What Makes Bend's Soil Unique

Bend sits on a massive volcanic plateau. The soil is largely derived from pumice and basalt — volcanic materials that create a sandy, rocky, well-draining substrate. This is great for drainage but challenging for plant establishment.

Bend's soil is also alkaline, with pH typically ranging from 7.0 to 8.0. Most plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0). Alkaline soil locks up iron and other micronutrients, causing yellowing (chlorosis) in plants that aren't adapted to our conditions.

Soil Amendments for Bend Landscapes

For lawn areas, we recommend incorporating 2–4 inches of compost into the top 6 inches of soil before seeding or sodding. This improves water retention and adds organic matter that Bend's native soil lacks.

For planting beds, amend with compost and, if needed, sulfur to lower pH for acid-loving plants. For most xeriscape plants, native soil with minimal amendment is actually preferred — over-amended soil can cause problems with drought-tolerant plants.

PRO TIP

Get a soil test before making major amendments. The OSU Extension Service offers affordable soil testing and will tell you exactly what your soil needs. Don't guess — amend based on data.

Working with Rocky Volcanic Soil

Digging in Bend's soil is challenging. You'll often hit volcanic rock within 12–18 inches, and the sandy texture means trenches and holes don't hold their shape well.

For irrigation installation, we use a vibratory plow to minimize digging. For tree planting, we sometimes need to use a jackhammer or rock bar to break through basalt. This is normal in Bend — factor it into your project budget.
