LAWN CARE GUIDE · BEND, OREGON · 2024

When to Aerate Your Lawn in Bend, Oregon

Aeration is one of the most beneficial things you can do for a Bend lawn. Bend's volcanic soil compacts easily, and compaction prevents water, air, and nutrients from reaching grass roots. Here's everything you need to know about lawn aeration timing in Central Oregon.

Best Times to Aerate in Bend

The best times to aerate in Bend are late spring (May–June) and early fall (August–September). Both windows offer moderate temperatures and adequate moisture for grass to recover quickly.

Spring aeration (May–June) helps lawns recover from winter dormancy and prepares them for the growing season. Fall aeration (August–September) is our most recommended timing — it allows fertilizer and overseeding to penetrate deeply and gives grass time to strengthen before winter.

How Often Should You Aerate in Bend?

We recommend aerating Bend lawns once or twice per year. Lawns with heavy clay or compacted soil benefit from twice-yearly aeration. Lawns with sandy soil (common in Bend's volcanic terrain) may only need annual aeration.

Signs your lawn needs aeration: water runs off rather than soaking in, the lawn feels spongy or hard underfoot, or you can see thatch buildup more than 1/2 inch thick.

PRO TIP

Aerate when the soil is moist but not saturated. Dry, hard soil makes it difficult for tines to penetrate deeply. Water your lawn 1–2 days before aeration if the soil is very dry.

What to Do After Aeration

After aeration, apply fertilizer and overseed any thin or bare areas. The aeration holes provide perfect seed-to-soil contact for germination. Water lightly every day for 2 weeks to keep the seed moist.

Leave the soil plugs on the lawn — they'll break down within 1–2 weeks and return organic matter to the soil. Don't rake them up.
